Does anybody know if there is a setting to stop XP Home from dropping out to the user login list after a period of inactivity. It drives me nuts when I leave the pc for a while & have to log in again. I am particularly concerned that it would interrupt a CD or DVD writing task.

If you haven't logged off, then it's in standby mode, and really just asking for your password. All your programs are left running normally. It wouldn't interrupt a CD or DVD-writing process, for example.

However, if you want to adjust the elapsed time before your computer automatically goes on standby,
1. Open Power Options in Control Panel.
2. In System standby, click the time you want.
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of either the Administrators or Power Users group in order to complete this procedure.

Are you sure it's not that the screen saver is configured with the password protection option enabled: Start -> Control Panel -> Display -> Screen Saver?
