XP Home in startup loop

Hello Happy New Year to all
I have a friend with a Home PC with XP Home installed along Kaspersky AV, Firewall, Spy ware and Adaware.
On New year's and since his system is caught in a Start-up loop, example.
It goes thru usual boot and then hangs at the black screen and reboots only showing the following information
"Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\system32..........................."
It will not start in any of it safe startup modes, I've done a bit of searching on google and it suggests it maybe one of:
Missing AV patches hanging system
Missing XP patches hanging system
Corrupt hal.dll, boot.ini or Ntoskrnl.exe
Any help???

I had a similar problem before with XP which I think happened due to my powering off the PC before it had shut down safely. What I did to solve it was put in the XP CD, change the startup to boot from the CD drive first (press F2 when the PC boots up first time), then go in to command prompt and run disk scan. This did the trick for me - not sure it was the same problem you have but worth a try.
