Working in mainland Europe for 4/5 months - where and how to pay tax

I was wondering where one would pay tax in this situation. A UK company contracts a worker who is then relocated to a European country. They are not an employee of the UK company. I suppose they could be considered a kind of sole trader. The European client would have a contract with the UK company and would pay them a monthly fee for providing this worker to them. The worker would then be paid by the UK company. They have a short term contract with the company. They would be working in mainland Europe for about 4 or 5 months and then they would return to Ireland.
Where would they pay tax? I presume it would be in Ireland. Would the length of time of the contract affect the situation at all? And when would the tax be paid? Would that be at the end of the tax year or could it be paid sooner? Are their any difficulties with taking up a contract like this?
