Work closed: day unpaid

In relation to my previous post regarding pay for New Years day..
(I work Mon to Fri, 9am to 5pm, no contract and have 20 days holidays as of 01/01/08).

We were shut on Wednesday 2nd Jan - I have been told that I shall not be paid for this day as we were closed and will be minus a days wages (I will stand my ground about New Years day.. thanks for replies). I am being short called here too? Many thanks...
 
Not a public or bank holiday but work choses to close, therfore you must take it out of you own holiday entitlement. Fairly commonplace I would have thought. Don't see why you shouldn't be paid for the day.
 
Thats what I would have thought - am I correct in summarising that I can take it as a paid days holiday (e.g work then from 19 days annual leave). I must state that it is a great place were I work and I couldn't ask for a fairer boss. I do feel however that I should be aware of my full rights as an employee.
 
I worked in the HQ of a building company that closed for two weeks at Christmas and 1 week at Easter. Any of these days that weren't covered by national holidays came out of our personal holiday entitlement (13 days out of our 23). It was a bit tough but thats how it was (and still is). Seemingly that used to be quite common in the past as well.

However, I'm curious, you said " no contract" in your OP. Isn't that illegal?
 
Its a small business that I run as admin manager for a family member. Ah the golden rule of family and work.. ! Things are exceptionally good here and there is never a problem with discretionary days etc so I can't complain. I do however feel that when it comes to wages I should be more knowledgable.. hence my posts.

No written contract does not mean no contract. There is a contract and its terms and conditions will be determined (if/when applicable) by convention/precedent if necessary. However the employee is legally entitled and the employer legally obliged to issue a written contract after a (short) period of time. In short it is illegal for the employer to fail/refuse to issue the employee with a written contract of employment.
 
Think boss probably does,nt understand general work practice, take a days holiday ..
