I am looking for a reliable joinery company for wooden sliding sash windows. I would prefer the weights system rather than the spring systems. All responses greatly appreciated.

Hi fh22. First post? - welcome to AAM. My friend used a company called www.sashwindowrestorations.com and she was very happy with their work.
Not sure where you are but they're based in Dublin and came down to Cork to do the job. She said that they took great pride in their work.

fh22 what is it you are looking for and where are you?
If you are looking for a composite material you'll get them made and installed for less than a grand each
If you are getting hardwood sash windows with double glazing made and installed they will cost you from between €2000 to €3000 depending on size and what else has to be done to them.
Lots of things affect the price how many panes of glass are in it, does it have an arched top, is it to be pre finished so on and so forth.

The most important advise I can offer if the type of timber that is used in the manufacturing of your windows, it is important that they are hardwood as unfortunately Ireland is not really suited to softwood due to the damp atmosphere that we have compared to our continental comrades.
The type of Hardwood should ideally be Iroko as this has the highest durability for our weather conditions. Mahoganny only had a moderate durability tag attached. Once in a lifetime is enough to be investing in expensive windows and doors, without having to replace them in 10 to 15 years time.
In a previous thread I have posted the actual durability details of the Hardwoods that come into Ireland.
As to the weights or spiral balances, it is down to personal choice as neither give any trouble.

I have replaced several spiral balances over the years that have become jammed.
They become jammed because of the moving parts getting full of grit and dust.
If you don't have the room for weights you should get springs (no moving parts) not balances.
Springs also look much tidier as you can't see the mechainism as it moves unlike balances.
