Has anyone had a wood floor sanded and varnished? I am considering doing this in my living room. The floor is in poor shape with many marks. Do this work or is it a short term fix?

I did it two years ago on a floor in a rental property. It was in very bad shape 10 years neglect and heavy usage.

It was expensive, more than just laying down carpet would have been.

It was a good quality floor initially, so able to be sanded.

The result was excellent. Well worth the extra money.

I would also consider getting it oiled rather than varnished. You can redo small marks much more easily than with varnish.

I also had my floor sanded and varnished last year. It was 18 years old and many deep marks, including dog scratches.
It turned out wonderful and I love it. No carpet could look so good. It will take a few more standings if I get 18 years out of each sanding.
I got an excellent person to do it and that is the secret. Browtal

I agree, but the success wil depend on the quality of the floor.

Is it old pine, modern hardwood or engineered boards ?

I would recommend doing it as I did it myself a couple of years ago but make sure you get someone good, don't cheap out
