Hi all,

I'm an only child with no children. My assets are an apartment and a savings account.
Will it be very complicated for my parents if I don't write a will?
Everything will go to them..

Also is it possible to get people in the solicitor's office to witness a will?

Thank you.

It would be much easier for everyone if you did write a will. Eventually you should outlive your parents so you should consider who else to leave your assets to in that instance.

When I made a will I was not required to ring a witness, someone else in the solicitors office did it.

Yes anyone can be a witness as long as they are not mentioned in the will I think. So cleaning lady, office secretary, neighbour etc. Two witnesses required and must be present at the same time and witness you signing the document. Obviously they have no sight of the details of the document. Their names and addresses are given along with occupation/status.

The rules on signing and witnessing are in S.78 Succession Act 1965.

More generally, the rules on wills are set out in part VII of the same act. This part covers sections 76 to 100.
