Wine value

I'm the biggest sceptic when it comes to wine "offers" in supermarkets.

However, picked up bottle of Isolado Douro Portuguese red in Lidl at 8.99 - a genuine reduction from €15.99 and a wine that would be considered good for €15.99.

So 8.99 is superb value. Recommended by John Wilson too. Full bodied red and goes down very well.

It's not in their usual offer section - it's simply where it usually is.

Curious. I don't see that offer advertised anywhere (including lidl plus) and even the recent Irish Times article you linked to has it at full price.

Just picked up a couple. Darned hard to find. Last row of the reds, regular bottles as peemac said. Looking forward to trying it.

I find it very hard to recommend wines especially red. We here have often bought a bottle that was reduced to half price and found it lovely. Then go and buy another one( same wine ) a few days later and it was not at all nice.
The one exception we find is La Crossade , Cabernet syrah French wine in Supervalue, when it's on sale for 8.99 . It's normal price is 17.99.
To us it has the most consistent taste.
We always say that we like it ...but everyone has their own taste preference, of course.

Keep in mind the Supervalu staples like the Crossade, Chateau Sissan, Les Hauts de Gros Caillou, etc., that are regularly featured with deep discounts are really terrible value at their 'full' price and are really priced like that to make the sales appear as particularly good value.

I used to buy the Sissan and Caillou regularly while on offer but the quality has really gone downhill over the years (or my taste buds' sensitivity is declining as they agee!)

I would only buy La Crossade when the sale is on ....as much as I like it. It's too expensive otherwise......in my opinion.

Supervalu bottles regularly on offer at half price - similar story to a lot of Tesco wines, the half price cost is closer to real value, but there are some nice ones at that price. But I wouldn't want to be paying full whack for them. Tesco Finest when they have a few euros off can be worth picking up, you rarely see them half price.

Supervalu (Sutton) have 6 bottle case deal of Flor de Sara Rioja for €50. Last couple of times I got it it was lovely.

Love a glass or 2 of red, am no wine buff but I have 3 simple criteria for wine:
1 Can you afford it?
2 Do you like the taste?
3 Does it agree with you? (Hangover wise)

From your recommendation, I bought one of these wines in my Local Lidl last week, we had it this evening.
A lovely wine, and absolutely a bargain at the price.
If they still have it, I will be buying a few more tomorrow.

Isolado Douro in Lidl is one of my staples, it definitely agrees with me. If you like it, then the Dada #1 is lovely in Supervalue. Currently at 8 euro. Id recommend not trying the one (can't remember which) with chocolate added. Nasty is the word that comes to mind (for me anyway, maybe someone likes it).

I was in Spain a few weeks ago and went into a local centra type supermarket …went to the wine section and noticed that some of the expensive wines in aldi (€14) are about €4 in Spain…found it very difficult to find anything above €7 in Spain..we are getting ripped off here..

The type of bottle you get here for €9-€10.is absolutely about €4 as they can buy it directly or from large co-ops. The convenience type stores tend not to sell bottles over €8 - just as similar stores here tend to sell very little over €12

I wouldn't say the €14 bottles here are €4. They mostly are in the €6-€7 price there.

To buy it in Ireland it has to be imported by a distributor who pays fairly hefty shipping fees and duty and obviously has their margin and then local distribution costs and then retailer margins and vat.

Minimum wage costs an employer about €18 an hour here and less than €10 in Spain, so that also adds a cost.

But go up in quality and the difference is far smaller in percentage terms as many costs are the same no matter what the price is. Example of a fine wine is Pintia Toro 2020 at €78 in Spain and €109 here. (Had a glass - exceptional!!)
