my stanby button has greyed out after windows xp recovery
 
Not much to go on there... perhaps if you check your Power Options in the Control Panel you might find that you need to tweak them?

Thanks , however in" power options" the stanby/hibernation buttons are not available, in the circumstances how do I retrieve them.

Let me start again and point out to you what caused Stanby Button to "grey Out"
When I updated my computer with Windows Microsoft pack 2
an error message came up on the screen, so in order to get rid
of it I ran Windows Repair that was ok, I then restarted the computer and after that my Stanby Button "greyed Out"
 
I finally sorted out my problem by looking for short cut to "hibernation" on the Internet. It instructed me to hold down shift key in the shutdown dialog, then hit enter and wella my Stanby Button came to life.
