Wind & Sky Irish Channel Signals

Why is at that all the irish stations loose their sky signal in windy weather and alot of the foreign sky channels do not. It is very annoying.

What delivery medium - e.g. rooftop aerial, cable, satellite dish, digital or analog etc.?

You mean Irish channels received via satellite (presumably on the SKY platform) suffer but other channels on the same platform do not? Are you sure that your receiver is tuned in correctly?

your dish is probably out of alignment.

Yep. You'll probably find that a lot of the minor/specialist channels will have lost quality too. Usually, it's the ones that have been added to the line-up most recently and are at the "edges" of the bandwidth.

Someone more tech-minded will probably have a fuller explanation, but I'm pretty sure that's the basics of it.

ooh, ooh I know this!! There are group of different satellites broadcasting Sky digital channels, each with a slightly different footprint. Therefore your dish may be aligned so that it gets the signal fine from some of the satellites, but may be on the edge of some of them. When the wind picks up, your dish might sway just enough to push it out of alignment temporarily from these other satellites, losing and breaking your signal momentarily.

You can maybe pay an engineer to realign it so it will pick up equally from all the different satellites. You might be able to find out more on lyngsat.

Reception of Sky chez emaol started to deteriorate following the stormy weather earlier in Jan. Intermittent loss of signal, poor quality when it did arrive.

Rang Sky and went through various procedures to reset box etc to no avail.
Was recommended to have an engineer call out, either organised through the Sky call centre or I could look through the phone book and call out someone local.

Did the latter, turns out there was a part on the dish called a LNB which had broken, resulting in the poor signal quality. Five minute job to replace and fix.

FWIW, Sky have a minimum call out charge of eur100. Local guy charged eur50.
