I've been living in Ireland for a few months now from Scotland.

My husband and I bought a house and took out a mortgage for 270k. We have seperated and he has returned to Scotland. I have no plans to return and will stay here with our 3 young children.

Is there any financial help I could be entitled to as I do not work and 1 of our sons suffers from ADHD with severe behavioural problems.

At present he is paying to mortgage in full and I'm getting help from my parents but this is only temp.

Will I get any help to pay the mortgage?

He has told me he can pay half (600 euro pm) long term but how can I pay the other half and live. Im currently in receipt of 515 pm.

I would really appreciate and advice

You can apply for basic Supplementary Welfare Allowance (SWA) http://www.welfare.ie/publications/sw54.html. Also ask about Mortgage Interest Supplement (this is part of SWA) and The Back To School Clothing and Footwear Allowance http://www.welfare.ie/publications/sw75.html (this only operates from June - September so apply for it immediately). Go to the Community Welfare Officer (CWO) for your area. If you're not sure where your CWO is located contact your local health centre and they should be able to tell you about the times that they are available.

When you are separated for 3 months you should apply for One-Parent Family Payment http://www.welfare.ie/publications/sw82.html

Apply for a medical card (also at the health centre) for you and your children.

You can also apply for Domiciliary Care Allowance for your son that has ADHD [broken link removed]. You've nothing to lose by applying.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

thanks so much. can u tell me if i will get help with the mortgage even though the mortgage is in both of our names, also is this long term help or just a temp solution

Mortgage Interest Supplement is quite a complex area and the CWO's are the experts. Your CWO will decide if you qualify for any payment towards your mortgage. They will only look at the interest portion of your mortgage. Have a look here http://www.welfare.ie/foi/swa_rentmort.html#2.

Assuming that your mortgage is €1200 a month and your husband is willing to contribute half of this (€600). This is a monthly figure and would equal €138.46 a week (600 x 12 / 52). This would be classed as maintenance. According to the link above the CWO would assess the first €95.23 and disregard the remainder http://www.welfare.ie/foi/swa_rentmort.html#3.4. There is also a minimum contribution of at least €13 a week. So it looks like you would have to pay at least €108.23 a week towards the interest portion of your mortgage. The maximum basic SWA payment you could be entitled to is €251.50 a week.

The best advice is to contact your CWO who will tell you precisely what you would be entitled to.

Perhaps one of the mortgage experts on here could advise you what to do about your mortgage.

There's also the Money Advice and Budgeting Service www.mabs.ie who can also help you.
