Does anybody know what Wi Fi stands for? Wi Fi is a way to access the internet. Some libraries have it if you are a member. Does anybody know where else you can access it and is it free?

wifi

WiFi is the general term used to cover wireless LAN, usually referrs to the 802.11b & 802.11g standards.

It allows PCs to talk to each other if there in the range of 10-100m of each other. If one of these is connected to the internet, then it potentially allows other PCs to connect.

The 2 main uses for WiFi are:
- network your house/office without having cables running everywhere
- 'hotspots'. Areas where users can access the internet (sometimes for a fee), if the have a suitable wireless card.

See below for a description & what looks like a list of hotspots.

Generally it's not free, but some bars/coffee shops have started to offer it.
