Why do we not have an active independent consumer body in Ireland?

No treatment or tests appear to have been done after 15.20. The consultant should have been around on the day of the tests.
True, VHI should dispute the charge with Blackrock though, not bill the customer who had no control over it (or let Blackrock bill the customer in this case). They do enough business with private hospitals like the Blackrock Clinic to have the pull to get a charge for an unnecessary overnight stay like this waived.

And cars should be guaranteed for 10 years.
I suggest there should be a standard minimum warranty period for all cars, although 10 might be pushing it. I have a Toyota and while it's renowned as a very reliable car, the warranty is a very small 3 years/100000km. Renault is 5 years/150k. BMW appears to be 3 years/unlimited kilometerage. Mitsubishi 8 years/150km. Etc.

it’s easy to see how the ASAI is funded. It should not have the status it does as it’s entirely unregulated and is not a public body.

Does anyone know how the CAI was funded? Is there a business in this consumer body I wonder?

The ASAI is in no way, shape, or form a consumer representative body so I don't really see the relevance of it to this thread?

Membership fees, magazine sales, and government funding at one stage?
It no longer publishes a magazine. Because of that it no longer takes membership fees.

The government stopped funding them a long time ago, presumably because they were getting very little value for money.

What exactly do you mean by this?

The ASAI enforces consumer protection laws under a self regulatory system. That’s the relevance of it.

It’s hard to imagine a funding model that is sustainable based on government funding alone.

Good luck proving that the engine trouble in your 4 year old Corolla was due to a manufacturing defect.
You just need to get an independent review, there are multiple companies and specialists offering that service. The Small Claims Court is then your friend should the dealer not comply with their obligations.

Reversing that, you can't expect manufacturers to foot the bill for abuse of misuse of a product.

I suspect the length of the warranty is inversely proportionate to their perceived reliability.

I would've thought a full service history in compliance with the stated service schedule would be the first step before paying for a review
Yeah, an independent review would only come into it if the dealer refused to act as patfert1 was suggesting.

The code is derivative. Look at the legislation listed.
The CCPC is the statutory body empowered under the legislation though. The ASAI has no legal enforcement power, they can only ask an advertiser to withdraw or amend false or misleading advertising, where the advertiser fails to comply they can only issue a public censure. For enforcement, they refer complaints to the CCPC.

100% and would add too as fraud is increasing +++++ that there is very poor protection against different types of financial fraud and support for people to be compensated. Fraud is a crime and yet seems to be lack of clarity around this. Looks like stronger protections in UK unless I'm misreading the info.

Yes. That’s why i drew this

yes that’s why I was mentioning them in the context of a consumer association gap.
