Why do we have to hand over laser card to retailers?

I was in Tesco this morning, needed to use laser to pay, I went to put my card in the reader at the till and the cashier said no that she had to swipe it, I then entered my pin in the separate standalone card reader, continued to pack the shopping, transaction processed and she then card returned to me.

With all the card skimming, fraud etc I personally would prefer to put my card in the reader myself, put in pin number when requested and remove the card myself as you do in some stores. After thought, this morning while I was packing my shopping and the cashier was sorting out payment she could have taken any details she wanted from my card as I really wasn't looking!

My question is....why do some retailers have to physically take your card to swipe it when there is a machine at the counter that you can put the card into yourself?
