Who's for President 2025? Any takers?

Is that a joke?
Wouldnt be the first sport star in Ireland to end up in a senior political position, Jack Lynch and Jimmy Deenihan spring to mind. Celebrity sells

I'd be more scared of the fact that he worked for the FAI then the fact that he was a very fine goalie

Lynch was a Barrister and a Civil Servant before being elected as a TD. Deenihan was a Senator and a TD before becoming a Minister.
Not the same thing at all.

I'd be more scared by him having no political or diplomatic experience and no understanding of the Constitutional role of the President. After the damage done to the integrity of the office by the current incumbent I think it is very important that the next President puts the Office ahead of their ego.

You wouldn't consider Packie to be a safe pair of hands.
I don't understand why sports people and celebrities are sought out everytime there's a presidential election. Are Jedward still excluded due to their age? We should probably be thankful there's restrictions to getting on the ballot.

Dustin? Jedward? Would that be allowed under the Constitution? A single consciousness?

In some alternative universe Presidential campaign:
The Eurovision Party are trying to decide between Jedward, Dustin, Linda Martin.
Daniel O'Donnell fancies a bid.
Joe Duffy versus Miriam O'Callaghan versus Bryan Dobson for the Media presenter party.
Packie Bonner versus Niall Quinn versus Damien Duff for the Soccer Party.
Joe Brolly for the GAA Party.
Peter Casey for the Dragons Den Party.
Conor McGregor for the <unprintable> Party.
Brendan versus Conor Faughnan versus Greg Pope for the Consumer Advocate Party
:)

Catherine Connolly launches presidential bid saying she wants ‘empower people to find their own voices’

What does that even mean? empower people to find their own voices’

I really dislike meaningless claptrap like this, usually these people will also say things like "we need to have a national conversation about (insert random cause of the day).

People are well able to speak up or have representative bodies do so on their part be they unions, politicians etc etc.

It means whatever you want it to mean.

I can speak with the voice of the murdered Victorian child that lives in the foundations of my house. It's a great party piece.

We have a conversation so that people can speak their truth (yes, it turns out that truth is subjective). The same people conflate opinions and feelings, giving equal weight to both.

She just doesn't come across as "likeable" in a way Higgins and previous holders did.

McGuinness has decent pedigree from her time in Europe and from what I see, represented the country quite well.

Despite his "history", I think Bertie would do well and be quite good in the position, but might be a little on the "mature" side.

It would be gas if he got the job and spoke coherently and didn't mangle the English language at all and it turned out that Bertie-speak was all just part of a cunning plan.

I was going to say something very similar! It's almost like the NGO bleeding heart types in the media repeatedly warbling on about, "the most vulnerable in society," which is used to describe such a large cohort these days that it's become meaningless.

(I note that the Irish Times report on CC's presidential bid launch isn't behind a paywall. Will be interested to see if every other declared candidate enjoys the same free publicity.)
