Who's covered by National Wage Agreements?

Myself and many colleagues in the company are outside these agreements, while many other employees are covered. What criteria are used to determine which group one belongs to? The pay increases of some in recent years have been below inflation, whereas those on the NWA system always seem to get inflation or better overall. Can an employee opt out of "merit" systems and opt in to the NWA system? Many Thanks.

NWA Agreement is mainly for Unionised workers in the Partnership Agreement. But private sector companies are under no obligation to pay partnership , whether they are IBEC members or not.

Your only course of action is to highlight the inequality in pay schemes to employer, they are perfectly in their rights to do what they are doing.

Have you a performance based element in your terms and conditions ???

What reasons have company given for the dual scheme ??

From a management point of view paying some employees more than others like this (and letting them know about it) is really stupid.

I've never worked for a company where everybody was paid the same salary or granted increases on precisely the same basis as everybody else!

Yeah, but management should keep their mouth shut. There's nothing more demoralising than knowing the useless members of your team earn more money than you...

My experience is the staff talk , and spread the info. T16 is a transparent cost of living increment , and staff on performance based pay can judge their rises against it, and make their own assumptions.

T16 is not a perfect model, but similar schemes operate in EU countries, and seems to be best we have at moment.

Anyways, to all on AAM

It's actually not ununusual for only certain staff to be covered by T16 in an organisation. For example if some staff belonged to a company that was taken over and they were getting the t16 rises it's possible that it could carry over to their new owners under TUPE
Likewise, managers, salaried IT staff and other high earners outside the civil service often don't get t16
Also possible that in an effort to control it's costs, the company may decide not to pay it to new recruits and insert a clause in their contract

.....salaried IT staff and other high earners outside the civil service often don't get t16.....
Fair enough but my question really is: Can a salaried IT person on a merit-based system opt out of such an arrangement and onto the T16 if other employees in the same company are already on this scheme? Is union membership necessary?
