Who passes planning permission?

Hi

I'm just wondering when planning permission is submitted for a development of houses, who decides to give it the go ahead? Is it the local town councilors?

I have lodged an objection to a development but I would like maybe do a bit more. The planning permission was made by a councilor (not from our county) so I feel like I should be a bit more proactive in my objection (maybe I'm being paranoid)

Is there anyone I can contact for support or do I just sit and wait it out?

The planning application is deliberated on by a planner, this planner may or may not have executive power, and generally they make a report to the county manager. The county manager then makes an order to grant / refuse. This is the person that actually grants the permission.

However your objection has to go through the proper channels as well... your submission will be kept on file and will be available when the planner writes up his/her report. If this person deems your submission to be relevant then this will be included in his/her report.

I dont understand when you say 'the planning permission was made by a councillor'... do you mean 'planning application'??

thank you for that info. I'm sorry I did mean the planning application was made by a councilor. I think there is a lot of hearsay going on around our area saying that the decision is a "done deal". I know I don't go in for all that speculation but I thought that it might help if I could do some more.

If you made a submission to the council on a planning application & dont like the decision, you can appeal it to an Bord Pleanala.

The important thing to remember is that planning permissions must conform with the local authorities Development Plan. If the proposed development is in accordance with the Development Plan, then it is more than likely going to get permission, regardless of who submits the application and there is very little you can do about it.

If it does not conform with the Development Plan, it should be turned down by the council. However, if the council do not reject it, an appeal to an Bord Pleanala will almost certainly succeed.
