Who got the LPT letter?

I didn't get a letter from the Revenue relating to LPT. I assume that this is because I use ROS. I got an email telling me I had a new message on ROS. As I was online to read the letter, I just paid it there and then in two minutes.

Did all those liable for LPT who did not pay by ROS get the letter?

I haven't seen the actual letter, but someone read it out to me over the phone. It seemed straightforward to me as I had already written a guide to How to pay the LPT online, but I can see how it would confuse people.

Would it not have been a lot simpler to send a letter ?

Your LPT is now due. Last year you paid by Direct Debit. If you wish to continue this way, you don't need to do anything. If you wish to change it, you must notify us by...

Likewise: "You paid by Credit Card last year. You will need to do x,y,z if you wish to pay this way again."

Or am I oversimplifying it?

I see from the Irish Times that people who paid by "phased payment method" - direct debit, salary deduction etc, won't be getting a letter.

Is there a copy of the letter online? Or could someone scan it and email it to me. brendan at this website.

That is a ridiculously complicated letter ok.

1) Why not tailor the letter to the method of payment used last year?
2) Why not include a form for those who can't or won't go online?
3) Why mention multiple properties? Keep it simple for the vast majority of people who have only one property - their home. Or, if they had tailored the letter, people with multiple properties would get a "multiple property" letter.
4) Why put the stuff about phased payment in a box?
 

I agree with those who say it is confusing: there is no clear statement that says when the tax is actually due for example. This is confirmed by the fact there's a thread of messages elsewhere trying to figure this out: if it was clear, this thread wouldn’t be there.

Putting the confusion aside, there is also a more fundamental problem of why those paying by one method (which happens to be the most convenient) are being penalised. I’d have no problem in setting up a single payment DD, but the problem is there’s a good chance I’ll have forgotten about it by the time it comes round: I just don't want to do this.

What’s also beyond me is why any change is being resisted on this: what would it take for the Revenue to say: “if you want to pay by means X, you need to set it up now; if you want to pay by means X you can do it before March. The tax itself becomes due on Jan 1.” End of story.
 
I forgot to say: I believe there was an ad in yesterday's papars saying something along the lines of "that's the way credit/debit cards work". In other words, implying the problem is with us (who are clearly a bit thick, and don't understand such things). It's downright insulting.

IMHO, they are the ones who are a bit thick, for not realising the damage they are doing to their own reputation.

Thanks for that information. That is a good start and good to see that they can tailor it.

It's a reasonable assumption that someone who paid online last year, will want to pay online again this year.

And good to see that they sent the payment form to those who made a paper return last year.
 
I got a letter also and it was really quite simple.

The first task was to choose a preferred payment option. I didn't want to pay it this year so ruled out paying by card straight away. Having seen first hand the payroll admin hassle it has caused employers to accommodate this, I ruled out having it deducted from salary on principle! So I chose single debit over regular direct debit on a whim.

Once this was decided it took two minutes to log in and provide my bank details and authorisation to pay on 21st March 2014.

I really think some people are making an issue out of nothing, this was the main news story for two nights in a row!

And tomorrow as well because the Revenue Commissioners will be appearing before the Finance Committee of the Oireachtas tomorrow.
 
I did not get the letter, earlier this year I registered online, and paid by single debit authority. Currently I'm on hold to revenue to get me a new PIN and property ID as I don't seem to have received an email last May with these.

Does anyone know if revenue send us an email last May with confirmation of the payment? Like they did with the household charge and the NPPR.

I paid my Aunt's LPT last year and she doesn't appear to have received the letter this year.

I can't find her PIN, although I am sure I made a note of it. I can't face a long telephone wait for it. While you were on will you ask them what her pin is for me?

After a very long intro I was put on hold, then got a person, but he cannot deal with me, has to be head office he said, then he came back to me after about 15 minutes, he's not authorised to give me my PIN. He asked did I want to hang up and ring this evening ! That's after about 30 minutes.

I'm currently at 9 minutes so I'll ask for your Aunt's pin too. It will save a lot of time.

What is the point of the initial helpdesk if they cannot just give you your pin, makey worky I presume.
 
I suspect that, while they won't give you your pin, they will send you out a new one.

Or if you want to pay it over the phone, they will pass you over to their office in Ennis, so you can pay it by debit card.

Well we will see soon, unless the phone gets cut off, hate that. I'm not paying by debit card. I got the pin and property id no problem, but now have an even bigger problem, but after a lot of talking a kind civil servant is trying to fix the system for me. Will give details later if it's sorted, as it applies to others who have properties subdivided but that are one property.

No. They didn't. I'm still waiting for an answer requesting letter to an email I sent on Monday.
