white marks on terracotta tiles

I have had white marks on terracotta tiles for last few years - just in one area of my kitchen. They do go with oil based treatment, but come back again. I have some rising damp in the kitchen which I am just about to get fixed. Is this dampness on the terracotta tiles? A guy does a lot of work for us said he thinks it is a result of improper stuff like bleach being used on the floor. These marks first appeared when the property was tenanted for a while, so I feel that there is possibility that they may have used something like bleach on the floor. Has anybody had any problem with terracotta tiles like this and any advice on it? Also, does anybody know if Quigley Preservation in Blackrock are good for dampproofing? Advice much appreciated.

Mob thanks a mil for your reply. A damp proofing specialist was telling me that the whole floor needed to be dug up as effloresence meant there was a 'water' problem underneath the floor - he gave me a price of E30k for digging up floor, putting down waterproof membrance and retiling. I'm now going to try the Aldion Effloresence stuff on the website. It's amazing what happens sometimes when a woman owns a house - not meant to be sexist - but just a fact that I have experienced on several occasions. Thanks a mil again.

Well it may well be that the only way to solve the problem permanently is to put down a new damp proof membrane. 30k sounds a bit excessive though. Removing the efflorescence might not be that difficult but it's the underlying cause that's harder to fix.

Thanks extopia. It is only on part of the kitchen floor.Do you think that it is from an underlying problem? I am going to sell the house - it is a rented property - so I just want to do the minimum of work. It was a property I inherited - and I would never want an old property again - too much work.

Hi, if you are selling and want the floor to look good, I’ve done this and it works. I work at a pub and had the same problem, I used kettle descaler solution mixed with hot water in a spray bottle, it works, cleans the grout up lovely as well, down side the room will smell of sick, so open windows, then I covered the tiles in red quarry tile polish (wax version not liquid - obtained on line) and polished and buffed using attachments on my orbital sander, the floor looked brand new, let me know how you get on xxx
