Friend bought a car in from UK on Thursday.
The Revenue rules are well set out on its site.

Key parts for this discussion are:

"In order to register an unregistered vehicle (or one previously registered outside the State) you must make an appointment with the NCTS within 7 days of its entry into the State to have a pre-registration examination of the vehicle carried out."
and
"You must complete the registration process and pay VRT at the NCTS Centre within 30 days of the arrival of the vehicle in the State."

When does the road tax start?

Is it from the date of the pre-registration test which could be June 2nd?

You tax it from the first of the month of registration in Ireland, but there will be arrears charged from the month of importation.

Thanks, makes sense, so no incentive to delay the registration into June as if I recall correctly the arrears has a 10% surcharge.
