When do you tell SW you're going it alone?

Hi Guys.
(I think I'm posting in the right area).
Just wondering about setting up as a sole trader. I was let go last June and have been signing on since. I've been thinking about setting up a small business (sole trader) and have pretty much everything in place. However, I need to register for VAT - not a problem - want to keep everything above board and straight.

My query is, when is the right time to tell SW that you're becoming self employed. Would it be before you register for VAT or after?

Check to see if you might qualify for Back to Work Enterprise Allowance before signing off.

(just noticed you probably not have the 2 year period of unemployment to qualify for this.)
