Whats the best way to get rid of wasps nests in Romanian holiday home?

I've got so many of these in the frame of the front gate and under the eaves of the house that using the garden is becoming impossible!

Any suggestions which don't involve burning the house down with aerosol flame throwers. Tried that already after a couple of scoops. Not too clever and made the wife angrier than the wasps! Tried fly spray and got stung!:(

You'll need to call in a professional exterminator as wasps are very dangerous - bees die if the sting you once, wasps can repeat the dose.

Get the experts in Rentokill will oblige - not sure of the costs but probably won't be cheap. Without the protective gear you are looking for trouble and an array of stings.

If feeling brave again, dress in heavy clothing the best time to strke is at dusk/night as they are less active and most of them will be cooked up in the nest. You should buy yourself enough time to give the nests a good spraying if its dark - then run like mad. Assess in the morning from a distance.

I'd be more of a fan of the aerosol method myself and at night for the added special effects.

Unfortunately we're talking about a holiday home in rural Romania about 40 miles from the nearest big city so Rentokill isn't an option. In fact I don't think I've ever come across professional bug exterminators out here although I haven't been looking too hard until now.

I was wondering if there might be a chemical solution which would persuade them to take up residence elsewhere, something like a foaming bucket of sodium peroxide left in the attic.

I can deal with them in the gate frame. As Yeager says it's a matter of plugging-up the holes at night when they are less active but there are too many of them in the eaves and under the tiled roof to take them on. I think I'm going to have a word tomorrow with a friend of mine who keeps bees.

Could you promise them a long break in an extensive choice of empty Irish houses or apartments - no neighbours, no builders, no hassles from Social Welfare, tax-man, immigration? Do you have wasp-whisperers in Romania, someone who could give their queen a buzz?

The hurling All-Ireland is on next week-end and Kilkenny will need all the supporters they can get; the wasps would have a chance to blend in during a great sporting week-end and "forget" the flight home.

i heard that the population of bees and wasps has dramatically shrunk worldwide,there was a documentary about it on tv,apparently its a doomsday scenario,no bees no pollination.

Don't know where you heard this but I can confirm that this was the year of the wasp. I've never seen so many of them before so they are on the increase.

Bee population decline is widely reported using terms such as catastrphic and [broken link removed]. You know it's big news because it's been given a snappy media friendly title: Colony Colapse Disorder!

I would not be listening to any advice from an Irish website on Romanian wasps. They are a very different species from the Irish wasps and don't build multiple nests in close proximity as far as I know.

You should ask locally. The locals probably all have some deterrent which is working so well, that the wasps are taking advantage of the poor Paddy.

I used boiling water to get rid of a nest of wasps. No chemicals. The water dissolves the wax of the nest and it collapses.

Wasps cannot produce wax, its one of the characteristics that distinguishes them from honey-bees. Their nests are usually of three basic types -
  • Grey paper-like construction of ground-up wood-fibre and saliva attached to a tree or building
  • Simple holes in the ground or burrows
  • A pot-like construction made from mud and saliva.
 
How accessible is the nest? My brother got a nest removed by Rentokil. They smoked the nest for a few minutes until the wasps were drowsy - a bucket of dampish firewood will produce plenty of smoke. Then the nest was dropped into a bucket of boiling water. For obvious reasons you need to plan your actions well in advance. For example will a spade dislodge the nest from the wall quickly at the point where it's hanging from it. Another thing my brother said was that the noise when the wasps were dropped into the hot water was horrendous - like being in the path of an Airbus. Think you'll do it yourself now?

mathepac - I stand corrected. The boiling water dissolves whatever bonding there is that holds the nest together and is very successful at destroying the nest.

I did not destroy a bees nest - I do know the difference between what a bee and a wasp look like, even if a little clueless about the structure of the nest! I had little choice but to destroy the nest as it was very close to my house, was rather large and I have small children.
