What type of bird is it?

Hi there,

There's a small bird visiting my garden (I've a feeder hanging from my clothes line), I'd like to identify it but I can't find anyone who can tell me what it is - hopefully somebody here can help.

It's a smallish bird (about the size of a finch), initially I thought it was all dark brown, but with the sun shining at a different angle I have noticed that the back is a very dark brown with a russet tone to it, while the chest and belly are very dark brown/anthracite grey in colour. The legs and beak seem dark too. Its head is also dark, about the same colour as its back. It's not a mottled/ spotted bird, its colours are quite uniform. I thought it might have been a blackcap but it's much darker than any of the photos I've found on the Net. It feeds mainly on the ground on the seeds that have fallen from the feeder, rather than from the feeder itself. It's shy but much less so than the finches or the tits (although not as cheeky as the robins!). I can't see its beak properly because it's too far away, and I don't have a digital camera. So far I've only ever seen it on its own.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I'd guess it's a Dunnock or Hedge Sparrow.

We have one of those as well, looks like a very dark sparrow, with mainly grey or dark brown colouring.

Thanks Buddyboy, but it doesn't look like a dunnock to me, it's much darker than the photos of dunnocks I've looked up on Google, and it definitely doesn't have those markings on the wings and back... thanks for your suggestion, though.

If it helps, the colour of the feathers resemble more this:

and this:

'fraid not... after looking into this a bit more I thought it might have been a thrush nightingale (either a black billed or a ruddy capped one - see
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/...ta Rica/Ruddy-cappedNightingale-Thrush2-1.jpg
and ) until I found out they are native of Costa Rica and Panama... I know the Gulf Stream reaches our shores, but I don't think these little things would appreciate the beauty of the West of Ireland's weather...

Iggy, thanks for the link, I had a look and it resembles a bit both nightingales and warblers, but is exactly like neither.

Don't suppose it helps that I've got a pair of those in my garden....know what you mean New Home - I tried to describe to my Mum yesterday. I think my two are baby chaffinches but still not really sure.

Thanks ACA, but the colours of my "UFO" are different from those of the chaffinch... I think I might have discovered a new species! :D

Darn... that settles it, I'll have to borrow a digital camera from somebody and see if I can post the picture...

Could it be a lesser spotted nightwarbler? :D

Darn Iggy, that must be it! :D

Quick, let me add a new heading to Wikipedia...

And I thought I'd just made a breakthrough discovery... ;)

If I get to the bottom of this mystery I'll post back here and put everyone out of their misery.

Thanks.
