I am having an extension done soon and want to change my hot water tank to a bigger one that doesnt get cold every few minutes. Assuming a family of 4 with maybe 2 baths and 2 showers a day. There will be a pump off the tank which will use up more water i guess. What would be a reasonable size tank? What sizes do the tanks come in?
thanks.....

I'd recommend a 300L if your pumping it. If your changing the hot water cylinder for a larger one you may need to increase the cold water storage tank in the attic that feeds the tank. Also if your changing the cylinder why not go for dual coil stainless steel so you can add solar panels at a later stage and heat your water for free.

How much would you expect to pay for a 300L hot water tank and where would you get one from?

Agree 300 ltr. see here for idea on prices rvr.ie

A copper cylinder that size insulated might cost you 500 (I could be out of touch on that price as copper costs go up and down like oil) but everybody is going for the stainless steel now as you may be able to provide the pressure within the tank for good flow at all taps without messing with pumps. 300L should do. you probably will get change from €500 (not a bad guess david!). A stainless steel one will cost you at least twice that.

I see no point in the extra expense and it really depends how how you system is designed. For example you can have a pressurised system with both copper and stainless, however there are differances.

With copper you can not pressurised before cylinder, but you can have a pump after cylinder pulling water out of it and not a pump/or mains pressure pumping into it.

stainless, you can hook up to mains pressure or have water bring pumped through cylinder. Unless you are going for a mains system (no tank in attic) I would go with copper.

with stainless there is the extra cost of expansion vessel/valves/TPRV.

All depends on your planned/exisiting system.
