What plants will survive on a sixth floor balcony?

The balcony is mainly facing south-east and part of it south-west. We get lots of sun (when there is any) and lots of wind. Would any plants thrive up here? What about fruit and vegetables? Any suggestions appreciated. I know nothing whatsoever about plants. Many thanks.

You could put some dwarf bamboo up there - grows to about 3/4 feet - needs very little maintenance, just plenty of water in the dryer weather. It has a lovely sound as the wind goes through it. Would also help as a wind break when sitting out.
 
Mediterranean plants would do well, given that they are adapted to harsh conditions e.g. drying winds, little moisture, full exposure to sun. Things like rosemary, lavender etc. - look for grey/whiteish leaves, leathery/waxy leaves, leaves with 'hairs' on them, thin (like grass) leaves.

Have a look at the Royal Horticultural Society's [broken link removed] - you can input details of your site and it will suggest suitable plants.

A key thing for your site will be regular watering - wind will dry your plants out amazingly quickly.
