I've become confused as to what is a billion?

A billion euro in the media appears to mean one of the following:-

a) 100000000 One Hundred Million
b) 1000000000 One Thousand Million.

Obviously there is a bit of a difference between the two figures. It would be noce if somone could put the issue beyond doubt.

In the UK, a billion used to refer to a million million (i.e 1,000,000,000,000) while in the US it was a thousand million.

The UK switched to the US definition in 1974.

(from wiki)

In the US/UK/Ire, a billion typically refers to 1,000,000,000 (a thousand million). In many European countries, this figure is referred to as a milliard and a billion is 1,000,000,000,000 (a million million).

1bn is never 100 million..

Short answer, it's 1000 million.

Thanks guys, the above appears to be the consensus correct answer.

Whatever it is..........It is a hell of a lot more than either you or I
will see or earn in our lifetime.

It is however an amount that our chlldren and our grand children and our great grand children will be paying back long after we are gone!!

Dubai only need ten of the things to sort out it's problems. Over here we need seventy of them.
You really wonder where all of the money went. It seems we were trying to build or buy the world.
The money was flowing in one door and out the other.

A lot of money!
