what benefit if any can my dad get ?

Hope someone can point me in the right direction
My dad has driven a taxi for 15 years now and has a mortgage (which he hasnt paid in approx 2 years ! ) he is at a real low , making no money driving anymore mainly because he has terrible arthritis ans can only earn once or twice a week if even , he is convinced there is no help for him throught the social welfare because he is classed as self employed ,where do i start with getting help for him , hes already going to lose his home and knows this , just a terrible situation , any advice much appreciated
