Wells: How easy are they to maintain and what are the running costs like?

We have been granted planning permission and our Architect put in for a well on the plans. Does anyone have any knowledge of how easy they are to run and maintain and costs for them.

An average depth deep bored well, with submersibe pump including (fixtures and fittings) and pressure vessel/controls and wiring and filtration for Iron Manganese pH etc will cost over €7,000.

The pressure vessel and filtration equipment will need to be housed so give yours self some room to allow for the equipment to be fitted and maintained.

Running costs include the cost of electricity for the pump (allow about €200 pa) and consumables (salt or chemicals) for the filtration unit. Dont forget to get your well tested annually (about €100) and get your filtration system serviced and adjusted annually.

Some pumps opertate for many years but some need to be replaced every 5-7 years. Filtration equipment typically last about the same time.

Make sure you site your well as far away as possible from your (and your neighbours') septic tanks and in a location that is protected from surface waters.

If mains or group scheme water is availiable then this is by far the better option.
 
hi, we spent 2500 euros to sink our well ( just under 200 feet from memory) including pump and all associated pipe runs, 4 years ago. We did have to sink the pipe from the well to the garage. They don't take up much room. Allow for a socket close to where you want to have the expansion vessel located.

Bury the pipe work deep enough to not be affected by frosts (like we have the past weeks) we did not have any issues and our water never froze.

There are plenty of posts re filtration/salt treatment etc on other posts. I can't comment on running costs, but I can't see them being to high.

Allow for a direct pipe run from the pump to the kitchen sink for non treated water for drinking in the event of treating with salt.

Make sure that you get your water tested as this will have a huge bearing on the type of piping/fittings used on your plumbing system. Acidic/soft water will attack copper/brass piping/fittings and Hard water(temporary) will cause furring(limescale buildup) on electrical immersed heating elements such as electric immersions, electric showers, electric kettles and even some ranges with a back boiler. Make sure your well is capped to prevent the ingress of sub-soil water and poisoned furry friends looking for water!!
