Looking at purchasing an '08 Diesel and it's likely to be one or other of the above
Any feedback on either of these, which would be better in any way, experiences etc
P.S At least 120 bhp

Thanks in anticipation

Don't know about anyoneelse but I have a friend who has a Diesel Passatt and has had nothing but trouble. It's not old but regularly breaks down. Worst car he ever bought. Personally I'd go with Ford every time.

Brother in law had a 06 Diesel Passat; loved in and did good mileage. Never any probs, but he had it serviced regularly.

Personally.. I bought a 08 diesel 3 months ago.
But I went for a Honda Accord. Super motor (just in case you don't want to limit yourself to the above 2)

I drive a 09 Passat Highline Edition, 140bhp. Excellent fuel economy (I got 1300km out of a tank before!), very comfortable to drive and i believe that theyare good, solid cars. I get through about 2 services per year due to mileage, and have mini-service in between, plus keep an eye on things myself regularly. It does need a good interior clean but hey ho :)

The only issue I have had was when i collected itfrom the garage (second hand, 8 months old). Warning light was on, i lokoed it up in the manual, took the car back to the garage and said I think the car needs investigating. They were insistent they only had to reset the computer. I went along with this but light returned, so i drove straight to the local VW garage, they put it on the computer and discovered mine was fitted with a recalled water pump. Booked it in straightaway for no cost and replacement a week later. Since then, no troubles whatsoever.

I bought a 08 Mondeo 1.8 TDCI from new... 5 door... great car, loads of room (especially boot) - no faults at all over the years... regular servicing of most new cars should keep them in shape.... I get around 600kms for half a tank of diesel - but all that depends on the roads / distance / esp driving technique... 6 speed gearbox... & when you need to overtake - you can :)

Just purchased our second Passat. Last one was 2005 never had a problem with it. New one only weeks old so no experience. We were pleased with Passat.
We also had Honda's in the past loved them in every respect. It was a question of husband and wife changing cars at the same time and wife had Polo, so for best price bought two Volkswagons. Good luck Browtal

Another vote for the Passat, have the 140bhp one - plenty of power for what is essentially a family car.
My advice would be to test drive both and see what you like. I drove the Mondeo but preferred the Passat but I have always driven VWs.

I got a good deal off a guy who specialises in importing higher spec UK VWs, if you want his details pm me.

I have an 05 Passat TDI. Great car. Not a bit of trouble once it's serviced regularily.

Mine was 105bhp but I've had it remapped to approx 145bhp so great power on tap and still giving me 50 MPG.

If it broke, I'd get another one and get cruise control next time for the motorways.

UK spec Mondeo would be my choice, Titanium X Sport 2.2tdci. 175bhp engine which is easily remapped to over 200bhp. High level of kit and a massive boot.

All,
Thanks for the info and experiences. Thought I'd share an update that we went with a 2008 Vauxhall Vectra 150bhp cruise control, great boot (got the hatchback) good spec, ex UK car only 49k miles
