VRT collection and the recent checkpoints

I am slightly confused as to why the Customs/Garda checkpoints trying to catch NI cars owned by RoI residents are always out on the roads.

Is there some legal requirement for this?

In the housing estates I see, there are hundreds of driveways with NI cars parked up permanently on them. Why not just call around the houses at various times and gather the info that way, then fine those breaking the law? To me that would be a lot more sensible than having checkpoints, which motorists can avoid.

Going into estates would be like shooting fish in a barrel.
(Although I would still advocate an amnesty 1st for a few months to let everyone come forward, that way increasing your road tax take).

I don't think there is any law against having a foreign registered car parked in your driveway.

It's only when you drive it on a public road that you are committing an offence.

Whilst an RoI resident of course.

But this is only splitting hairs to be honest. The Customs officials would know that cars parked on driveways, in the vast majority of cases, are owned by those who live there.

I have seen Customs do a tour round my own estate a couple of yrs ago, calling at doors and telling people to get their cars converted. But they neevr came back, and I really wondered why. It looks like such an easy way to get it sorted.

As said the offence is only committed when driven. So parked up cars are outside their remit hence all the checkpoints.

vechicles must be imported with a few days!! i too have neighbours driving uk registered cars and nothing being done bout it.

check out revenue.ie/vrt how can persons have non-irish cars in driveways especially along the border. saying that its not in use is not an excuse. a non-irish vechicle must be imported into the ROI with full duty paid within a matter of days

i hope this answers your "meaning" question or i can abbreviate more if you wish
