I am slightly confused as to why the Customs/Garda checkpoints trying to catch NI cars owned by RoI residents are always out on the roads.
Is there some legal requirement for this?
In the housing estates I see, there are hundreds of driveways with NI cars parked up permanently on them. Why not just call around the houses at various times and gather the info that way, then fine those breaking the law? To me that would be a lot more sensible than having checkpoints, which motorists can avoid.
Going into estates would be like shooting fish in a barrel.
(Although I would still advocate an amnesty 1st for a few months to let everyone come forward, that way increasing your road tax take).
