virus - Diallers

I have nortons as my anti virus. last night I ran a check and discovered two new virus threats. One was Dialer.Generic and the other Packed.Dialer. both were descriped as re-routers to expensive connections etc. It was possible to delete the packed.dialer one manually however delete failed with dialer.generic. I checked out the source descriped as where they come from and deleted it. I ran a check again tonight and it only found the old usual adware one which is there forever and does not appear to be any threat. ( I suspect the teenagers imported it from Kazaa - long deleted) Neither of the dialer ones were there. My big fear is that I am going to get a whopper of a telecom bill as a result of this and as a result I rang eircom today to find out if there was any unusual activity on my account, but the operator was unable to help as she stated it would not be possible to check out my account until the next bill was issued on 10th Feby. Does anyone know where I stand regarding having to pay for something I did not willingly use? Have I any options open to me to query the account? My ISP is Pigsback @ €9.99 per month for 27 hours offpeak and the usual charges for excess ie 1c per minute etc. I seldom use the net during the day except in emergencies or to check something out. While on to eircom I blocked premium calls ( no loss) . How can I prove that I did not re-route the connection myself- if indeed that proves to be the case? Can I stop eircom handing over payment to a dubious third party?

Re: virus

Do a search on [broken link removed] for 'dialler' and you'll get most of the answers.

Re: virus

Thanks Rainyday. maybe I am unduly worried, but until 10th feby or thereabouts I wont know. I think on balance that I probably have been skulled. odd thing is at that comreg site it mentions uninstalling and not deleting a carrier. As far as I can make out the original virus came in an uninstall program. I think this then opened the door, so to speak.

Hi Setanta...

This actually happened twice to me before (I was living in Germany at the time), I got bills for ~40Euro each time. Actually when we called the telephone company (Deustch Telekom), they said the call was to some porn line :mad ; In the mean time there is a lot more restricitons on what these premium rate companys can do ... and Eircom also had a lot of problems regarding this; they may let you away with the bill if it does come.

Hope everything goes well !!

Darragh.

thanks, darraghdog. suspected it might be linked to a porn site allright. can honestly hold my hand up and say I never connected to it, but maybe others who have access did or accepted something. wont know for another 10 days. all premium lines now blocked anyway so what ever harm is done is done. once all my calls werent rerouted through this I might be ok. was telling my work colleagues about this and one of them said when she was on line pop-ups kept coming up but she closed down immediately. still got a bill from eircom for 6 calls at €2 a pop. eircom refused to waive the bill. surprise, surprise! I either scream on 10th or cheer. will post then.
cheers.

All of the companies in Ireland that operate these premium rate numbers need to be registered by Comreg. If you find that some calls have been made to a premium rate number, make a complaint to Comreg. If they are not properly registered then you'll get a refund. Bit of a long shot but if the bill is a few hundres €'s it might be worth it.

Also note that some of these line operate from Pacific Islands that Eircom have setup a special rate band. Cost to these is very expensive.

The sound you hear is a muted cheer. Between 8th December and 23rd January I was caught for 77 calls to premium numbers - total cost 22.09 + vat =total cost just under €27. 76 of the numbers are to a 1520 number and the last one is to a 1513 number - all of 3 seconds costing 50c. The calls ceased once I blocked premium calls.Lesson learned is to do a virus scan once a week.I will now check my IPS account for the period and see if I can find out more. I seldom use the net during the day and the rest have been warned off too but these premium calls are all over the shop, morning, daytime, evening , weekend and deep into the night ie 03.29am when I doubt anyone was on the net. I appreciate your repies and now will contact Eircom, but not to optimistic on that front.

cheers

Those numbers are all 15nnnn Irish Premiums.

Contact the premium number regulator , Regtel, [broken link removed] for a refund.

Re: get your money back here

Thanks Tonka. Havn't got around to it yet but will do. Just in case the 'terrible two' were responsible I rechecked the calls in detail and notice that two of the calls were on 31st December at 23.39 and 23.39 (again.)
the terrible two were definitely not within an asses roar of this house on New Years Eve and your's truly and his lovely wife had guests and were, if I can recall correctly, mildly intoxicated at around that time. Defintely not on any net.
Cheers
