I am setting up a virtual machine on my mac so I can run windows programs. I need to install Windows XP. Where can I get it and will it cost much? Is there anywhere I can get it for free?

Not sure if you can still buy Windows XP anywhere. You can't get it "for free" without braking some laws.
However, if that mac supports Vista as well then go into next PCWorld or so shop and get yourself a copy.

If you have another older system that you can do without, you can remove the Windows install there and re-use the license key for a new installation. In effect, this would be the same as upgrading your PC.

Well if the prev computer had a OEM version of windows then the operating system is tied the the motherboard.
Well that's the way the Licence works anyway....

I assume you are using Boot Camp on Mac OSX 10.5.x?

Have you looked at other possibilities some of which allow you to run Windoze programs directly on Mac OSX without a Windoze OS?

For example

http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/

http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/

There are others and I have no connection with either, they are just examples. Try this search "run windows applications on mac" in your browser.

No you don't. With Crossover, as its a commercial implementation of Wine for OSX or Linux, the Windoze OS is not required, all you need is the legal application installation medium. They give a list of applications they support directly. Have a read of the specs (or use it or its pre-decessor, Wine, as I have in the past).
