Virgin Media - General observations....

I met up with a friend today who told me that he is with Sky....at the weekend he found that he could no longer record on his Sky Box....the message that he was getting was that the hard drive/disc was no longer able to record.
They seem to be phasing out the old satellite Sky boxes in favour of Sky Stream for new customers, that only needs an internet connection. I don't see the option to sign up for a satellite package at my address even though I have the dish.

It is not possible to order Sky Q online but afaik it is still available to order over the phone. And probably via their in store sales reps.

You cannot record BBC channels because you have a newer Virgin Media streaming box. These internet-based boxes lack a hard drive and do not support local recording due to strict BBC licensing and cloud-recording rights agreements
But they appear to be disabling the function on the older boxes remotely and when you contact them they are saying you have a faulty hard drive/box.

The Sky satellites are not being replaced, once they come to their end of life that's it.

That seems strange as they are still doing Sky Q. Is it just for people with Sky HD boxes?

Edit: Ah, I thought you were referring to the satellite dishes rather than the satellite. Sky are contracted to SES until 2029. There is no firm confirmation one way or the other beyond that. Speculation that it may be extended for a few years after that, but speculation only.

Our area received the VM cable upgrade, allowing other operators to offer high-speed BB via the same cable, two months ago.

I’ve been on to Eir and Vodafone about it and they both have “no date” when they will be able to offer products faster than 100Mbps.

Annoying because my VM contract ends soon and I’d like to shop around.

I presume that VM themselves are offering fibre services in which case you could cancel with them when your current contract ends and then sign up with them as a new customer if you can put up with the possibility of a short period without broadband?

True. Though I’ve never done that. Would I have to create the new contract in my wife’s name? Also, she works from home three days a week.

Decisions, decisions…

Thanks.

We survived pretty well for over a decade on 2 Mbps wireless, even during Covid when there were three people WFH, using Zoom a lot of the time.
Then we got fibre 1 Gbps just to see the difference, it wasn't all that apparent. Since then we've gone to half that speed.
My point is that 100 Mbps is to all intents and purposes plenty.
(Always check the ping and jitter if you have gamers in the house)

Wife is out of contract and did not offer good renewal deal so cancelled it 30 days notice on old Coax connection. So I thinking of signing up in my name for new customer under Fibre, as available in our area. Hopefully try to get it installed and working within the 30 days and let other one lapse

Wife may get retention call but anyone done this method?

"The several times I did this with VM (when their cable broadband was the only fast option where I live) I just signed up as a new customer with my own details once the previous account was closed"

Was this after or during the 30 days closing time? Don't want a time frame where we have no broadband. Understand might be double billed first month but if they install it before 30 days and working that's fine

Gentle reminder on how to quote posts properly.

I had a few days offline (it using a 4G router and SIM temporarily) when I did this but I could put up with it. I'm not sure that they'll accept a new customer sign up from your address when there's already a broadband contract in operation - e.g. during the final month of the contract in your wife's name. You'll need to ask them about this if you want to be absolutely sure that you don't end up offline at all.

I usually wait till a week before actual expiry date and sign up online again. They used to send a new router out but the last time I just continued on. There may have been a day or two overlap.
Just to add. This year I cancelled and after one refusal on their callback they agreed to give me the new customer deal so no break

When you say you wait for a week before the expiry date to sign up online again; is that having already cancelled your existing subscription with thirty days to go?

Thanks.

The last time I was haggling with them, they mentioned that only a small percentage of people get a call back about their cancellation because they would not have the time to get around to all cancellations. One would have to wonder, though, if it is part of their standard spiel.
