I only moved to a new house in November and the Tv upstair has no reception at all for starters not even the basic 4 channels, Up until now I ve been with sky but with mortgage and all other expenses i do not want to commit to monthly sky subscription for now. Is there a once off purchase that i can make to make use of the skybox that i have in order to receive the basic channels, with my skycard i still have access to some free view channels etc but i needed rte1 &2, tv 3 e.t.c for local news and stuff. Any advice will be appreciated.

You mean a FTV viewing card? Not sure if you get these from SKY or from other source. Are these the "Yellow House"cards that some people refer to?

Well anything that will allow me watch the basic TV with the sky box, i do not know what its called.

I am pretty sure you won't get the Irish channels RTE etc on a Sky Box without a subscription . (not legally anyway) You will need a normal TV arial .

Thanks, I guess i have to continue with the subscription. But for the upstairs tv will a sender be fine, I read the previous threas but i wouldnt want to have the downstairs tv on to receive signals.

If RTE were any good they would be FTA. BBC, ITV are FTA now and available on Sky box without Sub

You don't need the downstairs TV on but you do need the receiver (e.g. satellite receiver box) on. If you only have a single receiver then you will only be able to watch the same channel downstairs and upstairs. You may or may not be able to change channel using the signal sender - some or all satellite receivers don't use the same infrared frequencies as other devices.
