very good map of possible Dublin transit

That's very interesting, thanks Protocol. I'm curious now to see what's on the message boards on that site as it was blocked by the company web software due to it belonging to the "weapons" category!

How come the Northwest of Dublin seems to get a wide berth in this map?? And all infrastructure amenities etc?? Where are the TDs from theses areas. Do they sleep all day in the Dail??

interconnector

Not too sure about this as a solution:

Drawing stright lines on a schematic map is well and good, but translating that into a rail line (eg airport to howth junction) is another matter entirely. Not impossible, just not as straightforward as made to seem.

Also, reluctant to advocate running a dedicated airport service along the existing rail infrastructure as shown. Delays on the dart/intercity/suburban rail services would then reduce the effectiveness of the airport line.

Do not see anything inherently wrong in the airport line being standalone, not just for the reasons above, but based on regular use of the Heathrow express. Successful beacuse it is unaffected by other services, and only links to one station (albeit Paddington, with underground, bus, and rail links thereafter).

Fail to see how they justified not linking the Luas lines though. Criminal shortsightedness there, methinks.

Re: interconnector

you should read the messages and the arguments on www.platform11.org for making iarnrod eireann's proposal a priority. to me, it makes a lot more sense than spending 3.5 billion for a airport link which will dump you with your luggage in o'connell street or at the end of a travelator to tara street (details are currently hazy). most people use the airport a couple of times a year so the benefits will be restricted to a small number of people. on the other hand, we have hundreds of thousands of people isolated in the commuter belts who have no option but drive or use buses. the interconnector proposal (an underground link from heuston to Spencer dock) will result in three separate dart lines with dart services from places as far afield as kildare, drogheda, maynooth as well as howth, the airport and graystones. even the capacity of the existing dart services will be improved and it will link with the luas at an underground station in stephens green. in fact all three dart lines will be interlinked and will connect up all intercity services too (one train change to get from dublin airport to cork, for example). this will give huge numbers of car based commuters the option of dart services and would improved the lives of people all over the city. the airport metro project looks more and more like a vanity project for visiting tourists while leaving the most dubliners in commuter hell.
