Using AI on Askaboutmoney

I, for one, like our AI overlords and the results they poduce. I have found co pilot to be excellent and summarising data and suggesting courses of action. Fast and effective. Love it.

As I have said before, I have used AI and found it useful in certain situations myself. My point here is about people seemingly posting AI generated content without stating that it's AI generated. I consider this underhand, dishonest, and potentially undermining of Askaboutmoney's reputation as a reliable source of information on Irish personal finance and related matters.

I do use ChatGPT as a research tool, but I always, always drill through to the sources and check them. In a non-trivial proportion of cases, I find that ChatGPT is simply wrong i what it says about the source. Not wrong as in, it misinterprets or misapplies the source, but wrong as in it is flat-out wrong about what the source says — e.g. it quotes language which it says is included in a specific legislative provision, but when you read the legislatative provision that language is not there.

I am a dedicated user of the em-dash and have been for many years — long before I ever heard of ChatGPT. Ironically, ChatGPT, if analysing my writing, might conclude that it was likely written by ChatGPT, but it wouild be wrong.

I'm on a PC running Windows 11. I hold down the Alt key and type 0151. Your mileage may vary, depending on the operating system you're using. I think on a Mac it's [option key + shift key + -].
 
I don't think people need to declare if they have used AI, it doesn't really matter once the information is accurate, and people should be verifying things themselves anyway. Essay-length posts are dealt with by mods, so people can't just dump AI slop onto a thread. The thing I don't like is that the tone of writing can be very flat and unengaging, not good for a discussion forum.

I love dashes but have almost completely stopped using them because of ChatGPT — sad!

On another thread, someone was being called out for not declaring that they used AI to write their post, from a stylistic point of view (ie: the ideas were all their own but AI was used to jazz it up a bit). I don't see any problem with that. IMHO, that's one of the few legit uses for these LLMs.
