Unrelated Beneficiary dies before Grant of Probate

Hi,
Would anybody be able to shed some light on what happens in a situation where an unrelated beneficiary (a friend) dies before Grant of Probate. My dad left some money to a friend in his will but he has sadly died. He was alive at the time of the will but the will has not been proved/grant of probate has not come through yet.

It's not the time of the grant that is important, it's the fact that the friend was alive when the dad died.
