Under construction Insurance

Hopefully someone can give us a steer on this.

We (myself and my wife) are about to begin a house extension and partial refurbishment. Mortgage of €200k, the house is 100 years old and will be occupied by a parent over the duration of the build (9 month contract).

We have been approved for the mortgage and have been told we must have "under construction" insurance to cover for fire (the bank requires this prior to first draw down). The house is being transferred over to me at the moment.

Finding it very hard to get a quote for this. Has anybody come across this or could direct to a firm that provides this cover?

The house is a family farmhouse and we can't be the only people who have ever gone down this route.

Any help appreciated.

There are a couple of ways you can go about covering your house. You can approach your existing insurer and ask them to cover your existing property (you will need to tell them about this work either way) and then see if your builder has a contractors all risk policy (CAR) which he should have, to cover the structure and extension as he is working on it. If you are going direct build, you can take out a specialist policy that will cover your liability and property exposure in one policy.

There is also specialist policies that will cover your property whilst the extension is being done and also your contents (your existing insurer will only give basic cover whilst the extension is being done and will generally not cover contents)

A building under course of construction policy is a different type of policy and usually refers to a build on a green field site.

Greysoke best of luck with your project.
I found Travers Insurance based in Arklow wicklow provided me with the best policy at the best price for a new build policy. Maybe try them at 0402-32204. I spend a whole day ringing around for same.

Thanks for the replies, as it happens FBD quoted us today and the quote is reasonable. Thanks again for the interest and the replies.
