Hi
Booked a hotel apartment last April 2025 for a stay in April 2026 through booking.com, the property charged my card just under £1,200 (over €1,400) at the time of booking.
The booking had free cancellation up to a week before the stay. Plans changed so on 26th February 2026 I cancelled the booking and it was clear that the booking was within the free cancellation period.
After a couple of weeks of no sign of the refund, I contacted the property who gave some excuse that they no longer use card machines for bookings and would need to refund me via a bank payment, so I sent over my bank details. A couple of weeks later still no sign of payment and when I phone the accommodation they keep telling me that they have passed my details onto the accounts department and they cannot give any timeline on when I will received my refund. They wont give me a contact number or email address for their accounts.

In the meantime, I got onto booking.com who have confirmed the property have gone beyond the period to refund me and they will take action, however, the property has not responded to booking.com either. Dealing with booking.com has been heartbreaking, phoning a call center in Egypt where every call means telling the same story, being put on hold while the latest customer service rep gets up to speed by reading the history on it. Then banging your head against a wall when there is complete lack of common sense.
Booking.com have told me they will refund me while they chase the invoice the property, great says I. They want proof of the bank statement so I sent over my PTSB bank statement from last April showing the transaction in GBP with the exchange rate and the amount coming out of my euro current account & the name of the property.
They respond saying it doesn't show the currency on the bank statement or the transaction so I tell them it's a euro account, its an Irish account and it's default is euro.
Funnily enough, nowhere on the pdf bank statement I downloaded from PTSB does it actual give the currency of the account, or the currency symbol beside the transactions. On my wife's BOI account, its similar there is no sign of the currency of the account or the currency symbol beside the transactions.
When I log into my online banking and scroll down to the transaction it shows the euro symbol beside the transaction but that is not on the statement view if you get me.

I have sent over a page of the pdf statement and a screenshot directly from the online banking app of the transaction showing the euro currency symbol and booking.com keep requesting I show them a bank statement with the currency. On the phone they tell me I will get the refund then next thing I get a message from them saying to provide 1. A statement that shows the Transaction date, 2. Merchant Name, 3. Transaction Amount and 4. Currency Used. I have been onto PTSB, gone into one of their branches and spoke to the manager and that is just the way the statements are.

So, basically I am stuck in limbo. Booking.com want a bank statement showing the currency which is not possible to get and despite showing the transaction from a screenshot from the banking app they are saying it won't suffice.

I have phoned UK Citizens Advice who just suggested I contact the property again and were useless for the most part.
I have separately asked PTSB to do a chargeback but they have said if the property no longer uses a card payment banking system I may not get any joy there.

Genuinely not sure what else to do and I have got my self fairly stressed out over it all with all the calls and the fact there is a complete lack of common sense and feels like there is no options.

Thanks

Small Claims procedure against Booking.com maybe?
Thanks. I can consider that but just not sure on the following:

1. They are Dutch based, does that make a difference?
2. The property and not booking.com took the money
3. Under what exactly would I be taking booking.com to the small claims court for

I don't know but they seem to have some sort of Irish presence in case that helps.

I presume that Booking.com have some responsibility here? Maybe I'm wrong. But I would be looking at the possibility of taking a case against them for a refund.

One other option - maybe a screenshot on a PC of the online banking transactions might work? I think that would show the currency symbol?

I have already shown the screenshot of the banking transaction with the currency symbol, but they are insisting it has to be a statement.

How about going into your branch of PTSB and getting them to type up a cover letter, on headed paper, to confirm the currency of the statement and the specific transaction ?

I'm sure that the Permo will try to avoid having to do something like that, but you'd be amazed what an irate and noisey customer can achieve, if they cause a big enough fuss while the bank is trying to persuade someone to take our a mortgage etc. less than 30 feet away.

Would they accept an affidavit done through a solicitor stating date of transaction, amount in euro, exchange rate and amt in stg.
I’m not sure and I doubt it as I’m dealing with an offshore call center in Egypt. I’m essentially talking to a process flowchart and if the issue isn’t within the flowchart it’s a computer says no response. They just keep insisting on the bank statement showing the currency of the account/transaction and the merchants name etc. it’s all there on the statement except for the currency/symbol. I thought by me adding in a screenshot from the banking app which shows the transaction and the euro symbol it would back up the official statement but it won’t suffice.

The manager in the local branch did offer me that, I asked booking would they accept that and again the same response of it needs to be a bank statement blah blah.
Notwithstanding my post above, I do still fancy the Small Claims Court option, as the best approach, myself
I was looking up the Europeans Small Claims Court option last night too, just not sure am I better off taking the property to the small claims rather than booking as it was the property who took the money.

I’m baffled and so frustrated at the lack of common sense when dealing with these companies.

It's pretty poor that bank statements don't state the currency. It's too late now, but you shouldn't be using a PTSB card to pay in a non-EUR currency; their charges are pretty bad.

Is getting the refund in GBP an option?

Yeh, I was shocked that the bank statement doesn’t show the default account currency or anything along those lines.
The fact my wife’s BOI account don’t either, makes me wonder is it across all main Irish banks.

I suggested refunding me in GBP as that is the transaction currency and booking said they need to refund me in euro as that is what my account is in.

Can you use Photoshop or acrobat the alter the statement to their satisfaction?
I had already looked at this option but it was going to be my last resort in case they copped it had been altered and then stopped dealing with me.

I’m not tech savvy but I was able to save down a page from the statement with the transaction and ask copilot to add a line on the statement saying all balances on the statement are in Euro.

Going down this route is my last remaining option but again not sure will they know it’s been altered.

I plan on looking up LinkedIn to see could I connect to some senior execs in Ireland and see could I reason with one of them to help.

This is why I gave up on booking.com years ago
To be fair, I have never had any issues with them previously and the free cancellation option has been handy in the past too.

I think only Revolut of all my bank accounts would be the only statement with the currency on them.

A statement from a bank is a written document from the bank stating the transaction. Your bank manager seems friendly so get a signed statement from him with the date of transaction, amount, currency, etc. that should cover everything that booking.com have asked for.

The statement doesn’t show the currency is the problem, the bank manager said they can’t do anything about that apart from manually writing on the statement or stamping it or giving me a letter on headed paper but based on how the dealings have gone with booking already they will likely say that doesn’t suffice.
It won’t fit within their (bookings) process flowchart when dealing with the issue and they cannot deal with issues outside of the flowchart.
Trust me, the lack of common sense has me so frustrated. It’s not like dealing with sensible people, it’s a low paid, low qualified individual. Even when escalating to a senior as they call it, they are not much better.

The bank manager did say they are asked to pass on complaints or suggested improvements to head office and she did say they will pass on about the statements you download not having the currency anywhere on them. Too little too late.
