UK passport holder - first Irish passport

A UK passport holder applying for their first Irish passport with a certificate of naturalisation is asked to forward their current passport with their application.

I assume this will be returned as dual citizenship and dual passports wants to be retained by the passport office.

Is this the case?

I would expect so but can't find anything that clarifies this online. As you say, Irish citizenship does not require other citizenship(s) to be given up so I would expect that you'll get your UK passport back. Do they not also allow for a copy certified by a relevant authority rather than sending the original?
