A month ago we paid the deposit to Brittany Ferries with laser card, no transaction fee.

Today paid Brittany the balance with new UB Visa Debit card and got charged €7.50 transaction fee.

I spoke to UB who stated that they don't charge retailer.

Brittany ferries state
"For clients wishing to pay by credit card, we will make a small charge of €7.50 per booking. This is to recover the credit companies’ charges to us. This will be itemised on your confirmation."

I thought having this card would be advantageous but if I'm going to get hit with transaction fees I'm less inclined to use it and will dig out the chequebook !

I was looking at making a booking myself using a debit card and after I entered my travel details the following was one of the booking terms and conditions that appeared on the passenger/payment page.

"A charge is made for the use of all cards except Irish Euro debit cards."

I would certainly ring them and demand that the charge be refunded.

No doubt it was an error on their system. Many Irish companies are still only getting to grips with Visa Debit. Those companies who do not have Visa Debit set up on their payment systems may accept the card as a Visa Credit Card and charge accordingly.
