I understand that it is possible to claim tax relief on tuition fees.

In my case I would be paying the fees for our grand daughter who is aged 17.

This might be in a private home or a recognised college.

Can I claim tax relief on these fees and can I claim the relief if I am paying them on behalf of my grand daughter?

Yes you can. Revenue.ie has a list of eligible colleges and courses and how to calculate and apply for the relief using the PAYE services. However, depending on the cost of the course it might be little or no relief at all because of the high student contributions - no such thing as a free education. The first 3K for full-time or 1.5K for part-time courses are disregarded.
 
You also have to bear in mind that it's only tuition fees and not "registration fees" or similar. If a private college perhaps there will be tuition fees but if one of the colleges through CAO, in most cases there are no tuition fees for 4 years - but you do have the registration fee of about €1.5k or so - might be different now.

I know for my kids, there was no tax reclaim until the 5th year i.e. going on to do a masters
 
Thanks. I thought that my grand daughter might take a few weekend courses in the Institute of Education or similar coming up to her Leaving Cert. If I was to cover the cost of these I thought that I might be able to claim some tax relief on the outlay.
