Hi All

I'm in the middle of trying to purchase a laptop primarily for home use but I've reached the stage where there are so many choices I really can't make a decision on which one is best.

I'm willing to spend anywhere in the €800 region.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

C

Do you know whether you want the Windows Vista or XP Operating System?

I'd recommend a system with at least 2 GB of Ram installed that is upgradeable to at least 4 GB of Ram.

Do you have any must have features?

Will you be travelling much with this laptop or is it just for around the house? This will affect the size of the screen you have and the size/quantity of batteries you should have.

Do you have a preference towards any particular brands/makes?

You will get more value in lesser known brands such as Acer compared to Sony etc...

Will you be buying online? i use for buying my laptops. They have great prices, had an issue with a delivery once but got it resolved in the end.

Hi Philboy

Windows Vista would be the avenue I would be heading down and I would want bluetooth pre-installed and a 5 in 1 card reader.

Its generally for use around the house so I presume having a bigger screen wouldn't be a problem.

aircobra19 - Those threads look very good for anybody looking to buy a laptop so cheers for that.

You can use the advanced search feature in laptops direct , select the options that you want and it will give you a list of the available laptops that match your criteria.

Even if you don't buy from this particular website. It will give you a good idea of what features and models you can expect to get for your money and be can be used as a guideline when looking on other sites.

Using the search and the criteria you are looking for, one laptop that i see that might fit the bill is the following:

Basic Details - Make Acer
Screen Size 17" - Since its only for around the house (fine) if you will be doing any sort of regular travel would recommend a 15.4" screen. Bigger screen better for games and watching movies etc...

2 GHz Intel Dual Core Processor - Fast processor

2 GB Ram - expandable to 4 GB in future when it starts to get slow when there are a lot of programs loaded onto it. Min 2 GB for Vista anyways.

250 GB Hard Drive - Loads of storage. Can always get external/portable hard drive if you run out of space.

Bluetooth, 5-1 cardreader, Inbuilt webcam (not great quality but will do the job its required for), all of the required networking interfaces are on it.

Not too well up on graphics cards but it looks ok to me from the basics i know about them. If you are big into computer games, might be worth asking someone else with more experience about this.

For €830 and prob circa €30 delivery, thats a really good deal IMO and it ticks all of the boxes you mentioned.

Take a look around and have a look at some other laptops, there might be other features you like and may want. This is a good starting point for you i think.

Check out the monitors and screen res in a shop first. Only way to know you'll like a screen size and res.

Go for a MacBook and you'll never regret it - trust me :)

You can buy one for e799 on the refurbished section of the Irish Apple site - here's a [broken link removed], but this may go soon.

I've bought a few refurbished Apple products in the last few months and they've been perfect, so don't have any worries, they come with a one year guarantee.

You'll be told you can get a more powerful Windows laptop for less money - very true. But it won't be a patch on the MacBook....and I speak from bitter experience.

It's a quite beautiful machine, you'll love using it - go for it!

Thanks guys for all the help! Will keep ye updated when I take the plunge!

Again, really appreciate all the advice.

Cheers,

C

Do yourself a favour & get XP rather than Vista. Vista is much hungrier and flakier than XP, and it will bring a low-to-medium spec pc to a crawl.
