Transferring video files from memory card

I'm a complete novice at stuff like this so need some advice!

I have a pocket camcorder and three memory cards full of footage. I managed to copy some of them onto a laptop, not sure if they're copied in the correct format or not... They play on laptop ok. I tried to burn to disc but disc won't play in DVD player!

Basically I would like to have them stored somewhere safe, any other (easy) way around this?

When you copied them to DVD, you most likely just copied the files to the disc rather than use software to convert the files into a playable DVD. A lot of newer DVD players will play media files, but yours obviously doesn't, or at least doesn't support the file format used.

If all you want is safe storage, then what you have will do provided your laptop can read and play the files from the recorded DVDs.

There are lots of free DVD creators out there like this one, but do some research first as a lot of freeware is loaded with adware or worse.
