Transfer of tax credits after redundancy?

I'd be grateful if you would kindly answer a question for me?
My husband was made redundant earlier this year and is now receiving the dole (job seekers allowance as its now called I think). I am working full time earning around 540 euro pw gross.
My question is whether I can have my husband's tax credits transferred to me so that I will pay less tax?
Or are there any other ways in which my tax or deductions can be reduced now?
Many thanks for your time,
Helen

It is possibly a bit late now to have a transfer done for remainder of this year, but you can get any excess, unused credits or available cut-off point sorted on a review of 2009. For 2010 you can transfer credits to reduce you tax. The married credit may be claimed by either , the PAYE credit has to stay with your husband but will be needed there anyway to cover his JSB. Your gross at c. €28,000 is over the cut-off point that may have been allocated to you but given the drop in your husband's income you could arrange for more to be transferred to you. The maximum any one spouse can have in cut-off is presently €45,400. You don't need that but you could have sufficient to ensure you only pay at the standard rate. Possibly the best way to sort it ( if you're not registered for PAYE anytime on ROS ) is to ring the Revenue helpline number on tax credit cert and speak with an agent who would go through it with you.

I am in a similar position and according to the excellent website [broken link removed] you can transfer them by contacting your local tax office if one spouse is on Jobseekers Benefit.( not sure if it makes a difference if he is claiming Jobseekers Allowance as opposed to Jobseekers Benefit)

This link might be useful to you regarding other refunds your husband may be able to claim;

As your husband was made redundant it is more likely that he is on Jobseekers Benefit. This payment is taxable and based on his PRSI contributions so is not means tested and will run out after approximately 1 year.

If he has not found work by then he will have to apply for jobseekers Allowance which is means tested. Allowance (if he gets it) is not taxable

Many thanks for your helpful comments. I'll get on to my local tax office and discuss a 2009 review and tax credit transfer for 2010.
Best wishes for a happy 2010!

Black Sheep is correct on the difference between Jobseekers Benefit and Jobseekers allowance.

Best wait until 1 Jan and put in medical expense claim and all other claims then too.

In the meantime, register online for ROS (PAYE employees). In here you do a variety of things with your credits and allowances.
