Trading up - buyer chains

Hi. I haven't look to move since early 2000s but have started to consider it. When speaking to my bank they said that sales chains are not really done any more i.e. buying a selling at the same time. I was told that people sell their house and then move into parents or rent for a short while, then complete the buying leg of the transaction.

Is this really the case? Don't think it was last time I was in the market.
 
I don't know but I'd imagine for the last number of years given it was difficult to sell houses that someone with a house to sell would be reluctant to sign a binding contract and pay a contract deposit where they did not have a sale agreed on their previous house.
