Tracing Family Tree

My Granny whos 84 is mad on to me about tracing the English branch of her family in the UK. Does anyone have any idea where one would start/anyone ever done it before??

If you really want to go the whole hog, you could take a short flight to Heathrow and visit the National Archives at Kew Gardens, where they keep loads of data there. A Scots friend of mine has traced her lineage back to the 15th century by spending a few days there.
