Too late to defer 1st year student status?

Hey,

Just wondering if any posters or your kids/relatives etc... have been in a similar situtation - my brother started a business degree mid Sept this year. Two months into it, he's not happy and thinks the course isn't for him and what he's hoping is to leave the college and reapply through the CAO for a different course to commence in 2008.

Is it too late for him to retain his 1st year student status, i.e. will he have to pay fees in another college next year? Who would be the best people to speak to about this - CAO, Admissions Office?

All info appreciated.

I was under the impression that the government has split the payment of college fees into two parts. If your brother dropped out now, I think that he would lose the first half of his 1st years fees, since that would have already been paid. That would mean that he would have to come up with half of the fees himself when he starts a new course next year, but the government would pay for the other half. Both the CAO and the Admissions Office of your brother's university should be able to clarify this.

Hi, if he was doing an Hons Degree (level 8) and leaves between 31st Oct and 31st Jan he will be liable for half tuition fees next year if he starts another L8 course. Make sure that if he does leave he fills in all the appropriate paperwork at his college and does not just stop atttending. He will proabably have to prove to the fees office of whatever college he attends next year that he did in fact leave before 31st Jan. If he does pay fees next year Tax relief is available at standard rate for the Tuition portion.
