Times must be bad when websites are setup for the dole!

Discovered this site recently that is what it says on the tin.

Are things that bad that people are setting up websites for being on the dole?

Jobless and proud? Shouldnt people be looking for work?

Onthedole.net seems to be an information & support site for those unlucky enough to find themselves unemployed. As for looking for a job, have a look at this section of the site:

The jobless & proud site seems to be down at the moment, but a cached version yields the following:
Jobless & proud was set up by a guy called David. David moved from London to Ireland in 1986. He lives in County Meath, is separated and has 3 children.
David has had a varied working career including jobs as a factory manager, a building worker and a part time counsellor. He lost his job in January 2009.
He has never been unemployed before.

David set up [broken link removed] and wrote "Oh No: I've Lost My Job What Am I Going To Do? to help people like him who have lost their jobs and become unemployed.

The site deals with issues such as:

  • Coping with the trauma of being told you've lost your job
  • Getting your debts under control
  • Find out what you're entitled to
  • How to go about getting a new job
  • Coping with long term unemployment

To answer your question: Yes, things are that bad. For ongoing information you may wish to watch/listen to a news bulletin or read a newspaper, or maybe speak to one of your neighbours, who may have recently lost their job.

If you are lucky enough not to need to advice and support that such websites offer, I would suggest that you count yourself lucky and keep your head down.

Your last line, that such people should be looking for jobs, is offensive and unnecessary.

So easy of you to put down those now unemployed as you sit at your desk on this website as opposed to doing your job at your desk!

I was made redundant last year. Aswell as looking at askaboutmoney I have tabs open for FAS and Monster.ie. Not very much to look through but each day I do.

I haven't looked at the websites above but will do now. And to all of those (like myself) currently unemployed and also to those worrying whether this will be their last paycheck..........I wish you all well xxx

I'd much prefer to be working and look at local papers everyday. Have good education and am prepared to do most things. But am getting very disheartened when I look up jobs on FÁS for my area as 97% of them are work placements where you work approx. 35-40 hour weeks for 9 months with no pay, it seems to get work experience really. But no good to people like me who have mortgages and bills to pay.

Just checked the 'onthedole' site; check this out...
